But what do we actually do?

We are committed to our continuing education and training. Here are brief descriptions of some of the therapies we practice.

Thoughts

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a form of talk therapy that focuses on changing negative patterns of thinking and behavior to improve mental health and well-being. It is based on the idea that the way we think about situations affects how we feel emotionally and how we react behaviorally.

In CBT, the therapist works with the client to identify and challenge negative thoughts and beliefs and replace them with more positive and adaptive ones. This is done through various techniques, such as cognitive restructuring, behavioral experiments, and exposure therapy.

CBT is used to treat a variety of mental health conditions, such as anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and eating disorders, among others. It is often a short-term treatment that is structured and goal-oriented, with specific techniques and strategies used to help clients achieve their therapy goals.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, which is a form of therapy that aims to reduce the distress associated with traumatic memories.

EMDR involves the client recalling distressing memories while also following a series of rapid eye movements, taps, or sounds. This is believed to help the brain process the traumatic memories in a more adaptive way, reducing the intensity of the emotional and physical reactions associated with the trauma.

EMDR has been found to be effective in treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), as well as other conditions related to traumatic experiences, such as anxiety, depression, and phobias. The therapy is typically conducted in 60 to 90 minute sessions, and the number of sessions required can vary depending on the individual's needs and the severity of the trauma.

Play Therapy and PCIT

Play Therapy & Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) are two powerful, evidence-based approaches used to support young children and their families. While each therapy has its own unique methods, both share the same core belief that children heal best when they feel safe, understood, and supported by the important adults in their lives.

Play Therapy uses play as the child's natural language, creating a safe and welcoming space where children can express their feelings, process difficult experiences, and develop healthier ways of coping, all through toys, art, and creative activities. PCIT takes a complementary approach by bringing the parent directly into the therapy room, coaching caregivers in real time on how to strengthen their relationship with their child while learning calm, consistent strategies for managing challenging behaviors.

Together, these approaches address the whole picture of helping the child process and express what is happening on the inside, while equipping parents with the tools and confidence they need to support their child at home. Both have been found to be effective for children ages 2 to 7 (and older) who are navigating anxiety, behavioral challenges, trauma, family transitions, and social difficulties. Sessions are typically 45 to 60 minutes, and the length of treatment is tailored to each child and family's unique needs.
